Afghan Women Delegation’s meet with the Governor of the New South Wales

On 11 March, the Afghan Women’s Delegation, accompanied by H.E. Wahidullah Waissi, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, along with Embassy officials and representatives from Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), were formally hosted at Government House, Sydney. The meeting was presided over by the Governor of New South Wales and incumbent Governor-General of Australia, H.E. General the Hon David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), and Mrs Linda Hurley.

The engagement formed a key component of the 2nd Annual People-to-People Dialogue, held under the theme “Women’s Empowerment.” Discussions reflected this theme closely, focusing on the ongoing peace process in Afghanistan and the perspectives, concerns, and aspirations of Afghan women regarding the country’s future. The Delegation also explored Australia’s role and contributions to the peace efforts, drawing upon General Hurley’s extensive experience with the Australian Defence Forces in Afghanistan.

A central point raised by the Delegation was the importance of inclusivity in the peace process. Delegates highlighted the limited participation of women, youth, and the Afghan government in negotiations. While acknowledging that three women serve on the twelve-member negotiation team—a positive indicator of structural commitment—speakers such as Hadeia Amiry emphasized the challenge of ensuring meaningful and sustained women’s engagement over the long term.

The Delegation also reflected on encouraging developments in Afghanistan, particularly in women’s education, as noted by Sajia Behgam, who highlighted the significant progress made in recent years. Discussions further expanded to emerging global issues, including climate change and environmental transformation, underscoring the need for peace dialogues to address broader, future-facing challenges beyond security and military considerations.

General the Hon David Hurley reaffirmed Australia’s enduring support for Afghanistan, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration as both countries look ahead to the next 50 years of bilateral partnership. His reflections drew upon many years of direct engagement in Afghanistan, adding depth and perspective to the exchange.

The meeting served as a valuable opportunity for the Afghan Women’s Delegation during their visit to Australia. The Embassy expresses its sincere appreciation to Government House for its warm hospitality and meaningful engagement.
