NSW Parliament Features Afghan Women’s Stories in Documentary

Premiere of “My Mother and I” in Sydney brings Afghan women’s stories and struggles to the forefront

The Ambassador of Afghanistan, HE Wahidullah Waissi, attended and spoke at the premiere of the documentary “My Mother and I: The Untold Stories of Afghan Women.”

The event was held on Monday morning at the Parliament of New South Wales in Sydney. It was attended by the Governor of New South Wales, state officials, representatives of civil society organisations, cultural activists, and members of the Afghan community living in Australia. The gathering focused on sharing the stories and experiences of Afghan women in the diaspora.

The program opened with remarks by Maryam Zahid, founder of Afghan Women on the Move and producer of the documentary. Her Excellency Margaret Beazley, Governor of New South Wales, also addressed the audience and spoke about the importance of hearing human stories, the role of women in strengthening cultural connections, and the value of such initiatives in promoting social cohesion.

During the event, Ambassador Waissi spoke about the current situation in Afghanistan, emphasising that policies which deprive Afghan women and girls of education, employment, and participation in public life do not reflect the culture or historical values of Afghan society. He noted that throughout history Afghan women have played a fundamental role in preserving culture, transmitting values, and sustaining hope within the community. Excluding them from public life, he said, harms not only Afghan society but also the country’s stability and future.

He further noted that the people of Afghanistan, more than ever, seek peace, stability, and a future in which human dignity and the fundamental rights of all citizens, especially women and girls, are respected. He added that the ongoing tensions and conflicts in the region are not the war of the Afghan people, and that the people of Afghanistan need peace, opportunity, and a future built on dignity and national unity.

The documentary “My Mother and I” was screened during the event. The film tells the stories of thirteen Afghan mother–daughter pairs and explores themes such as identity, migration, family bonds, and hope for the future through the voices of Afghan women.

The documentary was produced to amplify the voices of Afghan women and to strengthen cultural understanding and empathy within the host community. It will also be made available online and screened in other cities in the near future.
