A Grand Celebration of Nowruz and Eid at the Embassy of Afghanistan in Canberra

A large and vibrant celebration of the International Day of Nowruz and Eid al-Fitr was held on Sunday, 22 March 2026, hosted by the Embassy of Afghanistan in Canberra, in collaboration with the Afghanistan Peace Foundation and a number of partner organisations. The event was attended by a wide and diverse audience. To access photos of the event, visit HERE.

Bringing together Australian officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of civil society, cultural figures, and a large number of Afghan-Australians, the gathering evolved into a remarkable cultural and social occasion, where a shared spirit of unity, heritage, and identity was vividly expressed.

The program commenced with the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an, followed by the national anthems of Afghanistan and Australia. Opening remarks were delivered by Ambassador Wahidullah Waissi and Mr Nader Saikal of the Afghanistan Peace Foundation. Additional addresses were delivered by the Hon. Julian Hill MP, Assistant Minister for Citizenship and Chair of the Parliamentary Friendship Group for the People of Afghanistan; Mr Peter Cain MLA, Speaker of the ACT Legislative Assembly; and Mr Brendan Smyth, representing the ACT Government and international relations. Speakers highlighted the enduring significance of Nowruz as a heritage spanning millennia, its role in connecting cultures, and its place in the identity of the Afghan people. They also addressed the current situation in Afghanistan, particularly the challenges facing women and girls, and underscored the importance of continued international support for their fundamental rights.

During the program, condolences were expressed by the Ambassador regarding a recent tragic incident in Kabul, in which many young lives were lost at a healthcare facility. The act was strongly condemned. Concerns regarding regional developments and rising tensions in the Middle East were also noted, with emphasis placed on the importance of peace, restraint, and the protection of civilians.

One of the highlights of the event was the introduction of the “A Thousand Suns” campaign, launched in solidarity with the women and girls of Afghanistan. Hundreds of messages from across Australia were displayed, and participants were invited to contribute their own messages as part of this meaningful initiative.

The cultural segment featured a rich and diverse program, including live music performances by five artists, the traditional Attan dance, a special Samanak song performed by renowned artist Mr Sharif Sahel, and community activities such as tug-of-war competitions for children, women, and men, alongside dedicated entertainment for children.

The Embassy grounds were transformed with traditional Haft-Seen and Haft-Mewa displays, Nowruz cuisine, exhibitions of Afghan handicrafts and carpets, and a vibrant Nowruz market. Participants also gathered around the Samanak preparation area, taking part in this cherished tradition and sharing in a collective atmosphere of hope and solidarity.

Lunch, tea, and traditional sweets provided a warm and welcoming setting for dialogue and interaction among guests. The program concluded with a well-received raffle draw.

This successful event was made possible through the collective efforts of partner organisations, supporters, artists, volunteers, and organising teams. The Embassy of Afghanistan expresses its sincere appreciation to all those who contributed, particularly the Afghanistan Peace Foundation for its central role in organising the program, along with SAWA, Resolution Community Services, and all partner organisations, volunteers, speakers, and facilitators.

The Nowruz 1405 celebration in Canberra stood not only as a cultural festivity, but as a powerful symbol of resilience, community solidarity, and hope for a brighter future for Afghanistan.
