Marking 57 Years of Afghanistan–Australia Connection
30 March 2026 – Today marks 57 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Afghanistan and Australia on 30 March 1969.
The connection between our peoples, however, goes back much further. From the 1860s, Afghan cameleers contributed to the exploration and development of Australia’s interior, leaving a lasting legacy carried forward by their descendants across the country.
Over the decades, Afghanistan and Australia have engaged across development, education, humanitarian efforts, and strong people-to-people ties. These connections, built over generations, remain an enduring part of our shared history.
This anniversary comes at a time of profound challenge for Afghanistan. Since 2021, the country has faced significant disruption, with serious consequences for its institutions and for the lives of its people, particularly women and girls whose access to education and opportunity remains deeply constrained.
At such a moment, the importance of maintaining understanding, connection, and engagement becomes even more evident. Relations between states may pass through periods of uncertainty, yet the bonds between peoples endure beyond any single chapter of history.
As we reflect on this milestone, we remain mindful of the shared history between Afghanistan and Australia and hopeful that these human connections will continue to carry meaning in the years ahead.
