Afghan Ambassador Attends Remembrance Day Ceremony in Canberra
On 11 November, marking Remembrance Day in Australia, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, H.E. Wahidullah Waissi, attended the national Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
This solemn occasion commemorates the moment when the guns fell silent in 1918, ending the First World War. Each year, the ceremony gathers the Governor-General, the Prime Minister, senior government officials, defence personnel, and members of the diplomatic corps to honour the courage, service, and sacrifice of those who have fought and died in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.
As part of the ceremony, Ambassador Waissi laid a wreath on behalf of the Embassy of Afghanistan, paying tribute to the Unknown Soldier and all men and women who gave their lives for peace, freedom, and humanity. His participation stood as a symbolic eulogy of remembrance and solidarity, reflecting Afghanistan’s shared commitment to honour those who have fallen in the cause of peace.
Ambassador Waissi noted that Remembrance Day carries deep meaning for the Afghan people, who have endured decades of war and understand the heavy cost of conflict and the enduring value of peace, freedom, and human dignity.
The presence of Afghanistan’s representative at this ceremony serves as a heartfelt gesture of respect, friendship, and mutual remembrance between the peoples of Afghanistan and Australia.
Lest we forget.
