Afghans based in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji wish to obtain an Afghan Passport should read the following instructions carefully:
REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING AFGHAN PASSPORT
- NEW PASSPORT
- THE EMBASSY OF AFGHANISTAN IN CANBERRA IS UNABLE TO ISSUE NEW PASSPORTS EXCEPT IN A SPECIAL EMERGENCY CASES. The Embassy of Afghanistan in Canberra is now extending expired Machine-Readable Passports (Not handwritten) for a validity period of five years only.
- APPOINTMENTS: Applicants will be called for an online appointment prior to coming to the Embassy for the new passport.
- VISIT IN PERSON: An applicant will be called to visit the Embassy in-person on the date and time of a given appointment. When an appointment made, applications sent to the Embassy via post and/or applications in the absence of the applicant will NOT be processed.
- APPLICATION: An application must be typed carefully via computer in English and Dari/Pashto for each applicant, with special attention to name and surname’s spelling, date of birth (Day/Month/Year), height, occupation, signed in the box and other specifics and accurate current address in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. Application forms can be downloaded here.
- TAZKIRA (AFGHAN NATIONAL ID): Applicants must provide their a copy of the original Tazkira to the Embassy along with the application. If the applicant’s Tazkira is not verified by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a copy of it will be sent to the National Statistics and Information Authority (NSIA) in Afghanistan for verification. A new machine-readable passport will only be issued once the Tazkira is verified by NSIA. All applicants who do not possess verified Tazkiras should apply for Absentee Tazkira (Please refer to relevant section for further information on Absentee Tazkiras). Starting from solar year 1396, Tazkiras issued in absence of the person which are not processed through the Embassy, are not valid.
- PHOTOS: Two identical recent photographs are required for each application. For more details about size and quality of the photos please read read our guideline at the bottom of this page.
- OLD AND HAND-WRITTEN PASSPORTS: The applicant must return his/her old and/or expired hand-written passport(s) to the Embassy upon lodging the application, if available. If he/she does not hold it, has to provide a copy of their visa. In case of lost passport, applicant should report it to a police station and attach its copy with required documents.
- PROOF OF RESIDENCE: The applicant must provide a copy of the Australian/New Zealand/Fiji Permit.
- EXPRESS/REGISTERED SELF-ADDRESSED RETURN ENVELOPE: The applicants are required to provide an Express/Registered self-addressed envelope. Embassy will use the Express/Registered envelope to send your NEW passport to the designated address provided on the envelope. Please note that all other types of envelopes will not be accepted. The applicants are also required to note the “Tracking number” of the Express Post to enable them to track their post. - CHILDREN: If a child was born in Australia and would like to apply for an Afghan passport, his/her parents, must provide:
a) Tazkira of the parents, either original or copy. The above procedure on Tazkira will apply.
b) Child’s Birth Certificate must be presented to the Embassy along with the application. The Certificate must contain the names of both father and mother of the child.
c) Marriage Certificate of the parents must be presented to the Embassy along with the application. - PASSPORT FEE: The fee for one passport with the duration of 10 years is AU$ 560. It normally takes about three weeks after payment to process a passport. For an extra fee, passports will be ready for mailing or collection in just five business days after payment (During Ramadan, it will take two weeks for urgent passports and up to four weeks for normal issuing procedures), once we receive all your documents from an Australian Post. The fee for urgent passports (if eligible) within five business days for the duration of 10 years is AU$ 640 (after payment). EFTPOS surcharge AU$ 5 will always apply for each transaction. Please note that once the payment made, it is non-refundable. It is important to ensure that you have complete and accurate information regarding the document processing procedure before making your payment.
NOTE:
- Ordinary passport fee AU$ 380, five-years validity. For lost passport replacement.
- Ordinary passport fee AU$ 580, 10-years validity. For lost passport replacement.
- Ordinary passport fee AU$ 50 five-years validity if you are a student with a valid student visa.
- Ordinary passport fee AU$ 50 five or ten-years validity if you are sending a recently issued passport for correction.
- PASSPORT EXTENSION
- The Embassy of Afghanistan in Canberra extends only machine-readable passports for the period of five years. The following steps should be considered for renewal of an expired electronic passport:
Application:
The following eight documents/papers to be posted along with your expired original passport booklet to the Embassy's
1) Duly completed and signed application form (typed and filled via computer not by hand). The form can be downloaded from the bottom of this page,
2) A recent passport size photo (See photo guideline bellow),
3) Proof of visa status within Australia - VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online); This should be printed and included. For those who are living in NZ or Fiji, please include printed valid visa page(s).
4) Original expired passport,
5) Colour copies of front and back sides of Tazkira/ID in one page,
6) Colour copy of front and back sides of driving license and/or healthcare ID in one page,
7) A proof of residence in form of any utility bill i.e. electricity, gas, water, etc.
8) a prepaid envelop for return of the extended passport (Please take photo of your prepaid envelop track number for follow up when necessary).

Please note that we accept documents only through the Australian Post within Australia's territory. Applications through travel agencies or third parties will be rejected and sent back.
Appointment:
No appointment is required for the extension of a passport. Officials will contact the applicants directly for interview or more inquires when necessary.
Fees and payment:
Once the documents are lodged and received through post office to the Embassy, the reception desk will call the applicant for the payment. The fees will be paid via telephone through EFTPOS. See the following details about the fee: The fee for the extension of one passport with 5 years validity is AU$ 250. Paying by EFTPOS costs AU$ 5 surcharges using debit or credit cards. It normally takes about three-four weeks after the payment to receive an extended passport. For an extra fee, passport will be ready for mailing or collection within seven business days, once we’ve received all your documents from an Australian Post and payment is made. The fee for urgent extension of a passport (if eligible) within seven business days is AU$ 300. EFTPOS surcharge AU$ 5 will apply. Please note that once the payment made, it is non-refundable. It is important to ensure that you have complete and accurate information regarding the document processing procedure before making your payment.
IF YOUR OLD PASSPORT IS EXPIRED, THE FOLLOWING PENALTY FEES ARE APPLICABLE:
- AU$10.00 for 1-3 months past validity date on passport.
- AU$ 20.00 for 4-6 months past validity date on passport.
- AU$ 30.00 for 7-9 months past validity date on passport.
- AU$ 50.00 for 10-12 months past validity date on passport.
TRAVEL DOCUMENT- The Embassy of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan issues Travel Documents for Afghans for the repatriation purposes. To apply for the Travel Document, the applicant must follow all above procedures. The Embassy will decide if more documentations are needed. The fee for one Travel Document with the duration of 5 years is AU$ 210. Paying by EFTPOS costs AU$ 5 surcharges using debit or credit cards. It normally takes about three weeks after the payment to receive a Travel Document. For an extra fee, the Travel Document will be ready for mailing or collection within two-five business days, once we’ve received all your documents from an Australian Post and payment is made. The fee for urgent Travel Document (if eligible) within two business days is AU$ 360. EFTPOS surcharge AU$ 5 will apply. Please note that once the payment made, it is non-refundable. It is important to ensure that you have complete and accurate information regarding the document processing procedure before making your payment.
- AFGHAN PASSPORT PHOTO GHUIDLINE AND REQUIREMENTS
- The Embassy of Afghanistan in Canberra only issues passports with high-quality photos that meet international standards for biometric matching. This helps protect you against identity fraud. It also helps you to cross borders more easily. Please follow our guideline for photo requirements:
- Two identical, good quality colour prints, less than six months old.
- Printed on matte or glossy photo-quality paper not from an inkjet printer.
- No photoshopped or retouching of any kind (including removal of background, moles, wrinkles or scars)
- Clear, focused image with no marks or 'red eye'
- Photos have to be 35mm to 40mm wide and 45mm to 50mm high. The size of the face from chin to crown can be up to a maximum of 36mm, with a minimum of 32mm.
- Because the photo background is white, avoid white clothing and white scarves.
- For women with scarf/hijab, both ears must be visible.
- Taken in full-face view directly facing the camera.
- With a neutral facial expression, both eyes open, mouth closed.
- For infants (under three years of age), the photo has to comply with all the other requirements above. No other person or object can be visible in the photo.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- Applicants are encouraged to apply directly to the Embassy, applications submitted to the Embassy by any agency or on behalf will not be processed and will be returned to the applicant.
- Ensure you write your full name in Farsi/Pashto on the application. Applications must be filled in computer. Handwritten filled application will not processed.

- Passport applicants living in New Zealand need to contact the Honorary Consul of Afghanistan in Auckland before submitting documents.
